As many of you may know, Tropical Adventures is a part of the Casa Milagro Foundation, and has been active in Hojancha since 2007. We wanted to let you know that we are running a community development program in Hojancha, where we are focusing on the following main areas:
- Cross-cultural understanding / Peace
- Environmental Conservation
- Art & Culture
- Health & Wellness
There are a series of activities waiting to be developed and organized as part of this community
development program, but of course it’s not possible to do everything at the same time. At this very moment we have two activities which we have already begun. They are:
- Language exchange program
- Open air cinema nights
The language exchange consists of one-on-one conversational sessions we are using to foster cross-cultural learning and collaboration, and to boost skills and confidence. If successful, this will provide an invaluable tool to help prepare individuals for jobs which they would not have qualified for before participating. We have initiated pre-evaluations and have set up a system for continued evaluation so that results will be able to be quantifiably measured.
At this very moment, we are in the process of informing the community and getting people to
sign up. The idea is to place everyone with a partner of their preference and have a one-on-one
conversational session. The partner will most likely be someone of your own preference / interest. On the sign up form you can express your preferences for a partner. You will also be able to choose the time of your preference and then we will try to schedule the most convenient time for the language exchange partners.
For now we are trying with one hour a week, but that can also be adapted along the way according to the preference of the participants.
The idea of this one-hour session is just to make conversation and exchange your knowledge with one another. So for instance if you are both interested in movies, you can just discuss everything about the movies you have recently watched but at the same time do it in another language so your partner can have the opportunity to correct your mistakes.
The intention is for the participants to feel comfortable with their partners, so that’s why we initially didn’t choose a “school” setting where you would literally sit with each other and learn everything out of books. If you can both talk about something of your own interest it would be easier to get comfortable with each other and just start talking without feeling embarrassed for your imperfections.
After that stage you will be able to get to the next level and focus on the area that you want to
develop. For instance if you want to be well prepared for a job interview you can help each other
prepare for that kind of specific situation.
Right now we are looking at a language exchange between English and Spanish, but we also have some Dutch and German speaking people who are willing to participate so depending on the interest we can extend our options.
We are going to start with a one-month trial and after that we will hold an evaluation to see how we can continue to improve.
So If you are living in Hojancha or in Costa Rica and you are interested in participating, feel free to contact us so we can send you a sign up form!
And if not, well, be sure you keep reading our blogs to get the latest info about our community
projects here in Hojancha and how you can help!
