Our History

Want to know how it all started?

Tropical Adventures was founded by Scott Pralinsky in 2005 out of his personal experience immersing himself in the culture of Costa Rica, learning the language, sharing perspectives with locals and fostering cultural understanding through service and volunteering.

Pralinsky says, “When we started, we knew that we wanted to do something to help out our community. After hearing the stories of all the local individuals and communities, it was really hard to figure out where to begin. There was so much need out there and, of course, we wanted to help everyone. We started one school at a time, one family at a time. And before we knew it, things took off. We look back to 2005, and it´s unbelievable how many people we have helped and how many people we now consider to be part of our family. It´s the best job I’ve ever had!”

Between July of 2005 and December 31, 2013 Tropical Adventures was a nonprofit. As of January 1, 2014 Tropical Adventures transferred the nonprofit activities to Asociación Vecinos del Mundo of Hojancha Costa Rica, which was also founded by Scott Pralinsky. The reason for this change was to put the responsibility and the daily management where it rightfully belongs: in the hands of local Costa Rican people.

At this time, Tropical Adventures now focuses on guiding our volunteers into the project which best suits their needs and provides them with personalized attention, taking into account their preferences and budget limitations throughout their planning and traveling experience.

Over the years, our positive impact has been huge. With the help of volunteers like you we have:

  • Taught over 10,000 hours of English to over 500 students
  • Volunteered over 20,000 hours working with sea turtles
  • Planted more than 4,000 trees
  • Sponsored more than 10 holiday events for more than 1,200 kids
  • And the list continues!
