As a volunteer at Barra Honda National Park you'll assist with our Butterfly and Bat Research, environmental education and installing motion sensor cameras in the park to help with wildlife research.

Barra Honda National Park is located in the Province of Guanacaste about 15 miles northeast of the city of Nicoya. The average temperature there is 28¼ C (82¼ F) year-round. It was established in 1974 for the purpose of protecting a major limestone system.

Barra Honda is a very unique park in Costa Rica where you'll find deep, subterranean caverns. Though there are other parks in Costa Rica where you'll find caverns, Barra Honda is unique because of the types of formations found here. Barra Honda is also famous for having the best views in the whole Province of Guanacaste.

Observed here year-round are many diverse species of fauna, especially birds. Though you'll also likely see pizotes, raccoons, guatuso, white-tailed deer and anteaters. We're happy to say that the animal life here has increased quite a bit in the last several years, thanks to our programs of Fire Control and Protection.

Barra Honda boasts a network of limestone caverns, those which so far have only been 50% explored by scientists and speleologists. Nineteen caverns have been explored and which are very amazing to see. They have capricious shapes created by the action of water on calcium carbonate (stalactites, stalagmites).

Right now only the Terciopelo cavern is open to the public. Its conditions are perfect for decent and experimentation. It's ideal for adventure tourism, yet it's relatively undiscovered. They are currently receiving over 2,000 visitors to the park each year.

Volunteers at Barra Honda will assist with trail maintenance, tourists assistance, fire control, sign creation and maintenance, environmental education, building maintenance and construction or general cleaning and maintenance. The staff provide comfortable lodge-style accommodations, as well as three meals daily. Basically, what you're asked to do is to help out with whatever the park needs for help at that time.

Our three main projects are currently:

  • Butterfly Research – capturing butterflies, building traps, identifying and categorizing them.
  • Bat Reserach – capturing and labeling them, and observing their behavior.
  • Motion sensor cameras – installing cameras in the park which capture pictures of wildlife, as well as classifying the pictures.

We recommend volunteers bring with them to the park:

  • Comfortable, lightweight and light-colored clothing
  • Hat
  • Sunblock
  • Insect repellent
  • Comfortable, closed-toed shoes

There is a restaurant with a pool just outside the gates where you can go and cool off after work. It's truly a beautiful area.
