Zapote is a southeastern district of San José where every year a huge festival is put together. The festival is simply called "Zapote."
Nearly everyone in the country makes their way during the week to ten days the festival is in full-force. It can get pretty crowded.
One of the popular events at the festival is bull baiting. It’s not quite like the Spanish version where people are being chased by the bulls down narrow, winding streets. In Costa Rica many "bullfighters" get in the ring at the same time and await the fighting bull to be released into the crowd.
The idea is to approach the bull, tease him a bit perhaps without getting hit yourself. Of course, every year there are several people injured. But it sure is an adrenaline rush to watch.
You’ll also find fireworks, restaurants, entire dance clubs made out of scaffolding, tons of rides – and plenty of beer.
My favorite ride is called “La Tagada.” It’s a saucer-shaped ride that spins around and bounces in all directions via a hydrolic system operated by someone who purposefully makes sure you get frightened. Watch out though: there are no safety features. Last year I had bruises covering my entire body!
Of the many fun festivities at Christmastime here in Costa Rica, Zapote is one you won’t want to miss! Get more information from the Costa Rican Tourism Board at 506-296-7074.
