What makes Costa Rica so unique? Simple answer: Exotic Birds! There are more than 880 species of birds in the 51,000 km2  of this country.  The birds are a great example of huge biodiversity. Therefore it features the most bizarre combination of shapes, colorations and songs that can be ever imagined. The Clay-Colored Thrush is perhaps the most favorite bird, because the citizens have chosen this bird as the national bird for several reasons! Due to its tendency to live close to the humans and to its wide ranges, it is well known and therefore mentioned in many of Costa Rica’s folk songs, novels and stories. What makes the males so distinguishable? During the mating season, they serenade potential mates with an unmistakable tune! And according to campesino folklore, the males  are calling the rains. So that is the reason why these kind of birds are cherished by the citizens.

The main problems that are occurring are the losses of habitat, hunting and trapping. The birds are still being trapped and hunted. However, there are some organizations who are fighting for the birds; life’s, such as the Tropical Adventures.

All the colors, feathers, sounds and rituals of the exotic birds can be enjoyed in an accessible and professional way at their habitat by bird watching or birding tours.
