Of course, getting to know the language was one of my biggest challenges. But it turns out, it’s not the only obstacle I had to overcome. Isaac and I went to a two-year-old’s birthday party for one of his co-workers when he was still working at Equifax last year. Here is a picture of the birthday girl, Michele, and her buddy, Gabriele.

I was doing my best to fit in, so I thought I would impress the kids by “stealing” the birthday girl’s nose and then displaying it as my thumb between my index and middle finger, as so many North American parents and adults would do to a child in play. Well, little did I know that here in Costa Rica, that exact finger sign means “fuck you!” Let’s just say my attempt at fitting in didn’t go over as well as I had hoped!
