In the last couple of years I’ve posted only one or two entries about being gay in Costa Rica. Yet with very little information on our site about the whole gay thing, we get thousands of hits from people searching about Gay Costa Rica.
So I figured I’d write just a little bit more about the subject so that people searching for more info can actually have something of more substance to read.
I’ve lived in Costa Rica now for over 3 years. I’ve never had a single problem with anyone regarding my sexuality, and nor do I hide it. All our friends, neighbors, employees, etc. know that we are gay.
I know many, many gay people here in Costa Rica. We have several gay bars and clubs and they are always packed with people. Many Ticos (people from Costa Rica)are shy and closeted. Most Ticos I’ve spoken with are semi-openly-gay, usually just avoiding talking about their sexuality with their parents. Most under the age of 30 seem to be very comfortable with their sexuality, as are many over the age of 30.
I personally feel very comfortable here. I never have to look over my shoulder, keep from hugging and kissing my friends in public, nor pretend I’m straight. The best way to explain it is to say that it’s a non-issue.
We have our own "gay area" here know as Manuel Antonio. There are several gay resorts and hotels in that town. There is even a nude beach there, Playita.
For reasons I can’t even begin to understand or explain, the gay population in Costa Rica is large. Even in the very small town where I live, I bet I’ve met over 30 gay people in the last two years. And I certainly don’t know everyone.
I personally believe that Costa Rica is a great destination for gay travel, as well as a wonderful place to live as a gay person.
