Today is the big day! Costa Rica and Germany will be the first teams to play after the opening ceremonies. I wish I could say that was good news, but I’m afraid it’s a lot of pressure for the team. Costa Rica’s "Sele" is already nervous enough about playing Germany, so this is just added pressure.
And if that were not bad enough, in pre-World Cup play Germany has scored 12 goals where Costa Rica has scored only two. Many of my Tico friends say they will be pleased — and feel like Costa Rica has won — if they don’t lose big.
Having been here for over two years, I have seen many celebrations and holidays. But so far nothing has topped the excitement of the World Cup. Costa Rica itself is spending over $4 million dollars promoting the country in European advertising. Here at home there is nothing else to talk about. Everyone seems to own team shirts and all houses and cars carry Costa Rican flags.
Personally, I’m on my way out the door to a party. I’m sure it’ll be crazy. And if Costa Rica actually does win….the drive home will be insane!
